Seven Things You Should Know about Abel Maldonado

Abel Maldonado desires to be California's Governor in 2014.  There are a few things you should know. The future of our state is dependent upon the character and principles of those we elect. No matter how well intentioned or how well plans for reform are carried out, they will fail if we ignore natural rights and limited government.

“. . . he’s at the left most end of the Republican party distribution in California.
Actually, he’s in the most liberal 3rd percentile in the party.
That is, 97% of all Republicans who have served between 1993 and 2006
in either the Assembly or the Senate are more conservative than him.”

1.  Violated his Taxpayer Protection Pledge
"Maldonado refused to sign the Taxpayer Protection Pledge for his CA-24 race, he betrayed  voters by violating his written commitment to them to "oppose any and all tax hikes" as a state legislator."  (Americans for Tax Reform, 6/1/12)

2. Voted for Largest State Tax Increase in U.S. History
In the middle of the largest recession in modern history, Maldonado cast the tie breaking budget vote for a 13 billion tax hike. (Schwarzenegger subsequently appointed Maldonado to fill Garamendi's vacant Lt. Governor seat)

3.  2nd Amendment
Maldonado was one of four Republicans to vote for the semi-automatic weapons ban (SB23)

"These are weapons of war; they shouldn't be on the streets,"
     - Assemblyman Abel Maldonado (Los Angeles Times, 7/13/99)

4. Mandatory Child Vaccines
Voted to strip parents of their right to exempt their child from vaccinations.
     (AB 16), (Maldonado vote)

5. Proposition 14 - 'Top 2 Primary' System
Maldonado authored Proposition14 drawing the ire of the California Republican Party, which unsuccessfully fought Prop 14 during the 2010 election.   Prop 14 virtually excludes a third party nominee while allowing Democrats to participate in the selection of Republican nominees - thus moving the GOP in a moderate direction. A concentration of power among the two major parties.

"Proposition 14 is the brainchild of Republican Abel Maldonado, a former state senator who recently was confirmed as the state's new lieutenant governor." (ABC News, 6/4/10)

6. Supported the DREAM Act
Maldonado supported using taxpayer money to fund the education of non-citizens.
     (Capitol Alert, 12/2/10)

7. Supported Global Warming Education in Schools
Abel Maldonado voted "Yes". (SB 908, 1/30/08)

"Abel Maldonado is a tax hiking Republican
and voters should pay close attention to his record ...
California's number on employer is the government
and the state budget has more than doubled in the last decade."
